And

(3D) = 5T or

D = 3 5T equation 2

Because equation 1 = equation 2

4T = 3 5T

9T = 3

T = 1/3 hour = 20 minutes

Answer: Jim and John will pedal for 20 minutes even if they cross.

What helps, for example.

When you pedal in opposite directions, when they meet, their distance increases the width of the lake.

Let t = the time when they pedaled.

4t + 5t = 3

9t = 3

t = 1/3 hour or 20 minutes.
