Quilt vs comforter

Is a quilt the same as a comforter? Quilts are thicker, usually unadorned, and both sides are usually the same. While quilts have many uses, quilts are only used as bedspreads. There are also duvets that are even thicker than duvets. The term "Duvet" is only used in American English.
