T-moldings are used to create a transition between two floors of equal thickness. For example, in a room that’s running over 40 feet in length, we recommend a transition molding to divide the floor and introduce an expansion gap (hidden by the T-molding) within a reasonable distance for structural stability.

Do you need transition pieces for laminate?

If you are dealing with two different types of floor coverings, a transition strip is almost always required. For laminate flooring, for example, you can purchase hardwood transition strips that look just like your laminate.

Do you need t molding between rooms?

As a rule, we recommend using transitional molding in any room that is larger than 30 feet in width without any obstructions. Without this, the stability and strength of your floors are in jeopardy. You are installing a floating floor, so joint stability is something to keep in mind.

Should you use T-molding?

Yes, when directed by the manufacturer T-molding transitions and expansion breaks must be used. The reasons manufacturers recommend expansion breaks and doorway transitions in floating floors is three-fold. When the indoor humidity climbs over 55% floor boards tend to swell or expand, this is normal.

How much space do you need for T-molding?

The standard width of a T-molding strip is 2 inches, and the standard height is 5/8 inch. The base of the T-shape can range from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inches wide. Leave a 1-inch space on the floor to accommodate the base of the T-molding strip.

Can you put laminate flooring in backwards?

It may still be possible to install laminate flooring from other manufacturers in reverse, but you need to be cautious that you don’t damage the tongue and groove while doing so. Those who install laminate flooring professionally have no problem installing it in reverse.
